Six (6) MWSS officers joined the scientific community as they participated in the 1st National Scientific Conference on Water themed as “Integrated Water Resource Management Harmonizing Research Technology and Policy Toward Water Security For All”, held at the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), University of the Philippines in Los Banos last 8 November 2019.
The scientific conference came in the heels of escalating issues on water and resource security, as majority of Metro Manila consumers are experiencing rotational water service interruptions, a second time this year, due to declining water level at Angat.
The conference organized as a platform for grassroots actions, proved that science provides valuable solutions and tools to 21st century water problems. The conference strived to go beyond science though, as it built bridges between various academic disciplines and different stakeholder groups.
The 2-day learning opportunity was made possible by the more than 50 experts from the scientific community, government and non-government agencies who shared their knowledge on research, technology, policy and institutional improvements that will provide solid basis towards attaining water security.
On the third day participants went to the 7-crater lakes in San Pablo City Laguna, where the UPLB research team partnered with National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP), Department of Tourism Region IV-A, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), Laguna Provincial Government, and San Pablo City Government in conserving the lake’s ecosystem.
