To mitigate the deforestation and forest degradation of Ipo Watershed that is adversely affecting the water supply of Metro Manila, the MWSS organized a planning workshop to come up with a more effective management strategy for the protection and conservation of this critical watershed. This one – day event held last May 15, 2019 at the MWSS Office in Balara, Quezon City, was participated in by key officials from DENR Bulacan, NAPOCOR – Watershed Management Department, Manila Water, Maynilad and Bantay Gubat.
The main output of this workshop is the plan of action for the strengthening of the Ipo Watershed Protection System through (1) the conduct of comprehensive watershed security assessment; (2) development and operationalization of an effective Watershed Protection System; (3) organizing and institutional strengthening of Multi-sectoral Watershed Protection Group and Bantay Gubat Teams including a more responsive and efficient system for their engagement and compensation; and (4) establishment and operations of biodiversity-friendly community enterprise and other social development initiatives. These initiatives will be recommended to the Tripartite Executive Committee for the Management of Ipo Watershed for approval and endorsement to the water concessionaires for their funding support and execution in accordance with the Tripartite Memorandum of Agreement dated December 16, 2009 and Supplemental Agreement dated May 2013.
The Bantay Gubat/Dumagat Leaders present during the workshop expressed their gratitude to MWSS, DENR and the water concessionaires for helping realize their aspirations and they gave their strong commitment to continue their unwavering support in the protection and conservation of Ipo Watershed.
