A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the MWSS and Singapore’s Public Utilities Board (PUB) on 9 September 2019. PUB is MWSS’ counterpart in Singapore that manages the entire water loop from catchment management to water treatment and re-use.
The signing of the MOU was one of the eight (8) MOUs signed as “Witness” by President Rodrigo Duterte and Singapore’s President Halimah Yacob during her State Visit in the country.
The MOU was approved by the Board of Trustees and signed by Administrator Emmanuel Salamat on 22 August 2019.
MWSS will have a lot to gain from the Cooperation considering how Singapore, just like the Philippines, has faced droughts, floods and water pollution. Singapore has ensured a sustainable water supply using well-accepted solutions such as urbanized catchments (half of Singapore’s total land area is used as water catchment to harness storm water) and the use of high grade reclaimed water (recycled from treated sewage).
MWSS hopes to replicate Singapore’s successful water management experiences in becoming more climate-resilient and in responding to growing demands for water resources.
