There was a time when the first thing that comes to mind when Manila Bay is mentioned is its remarkable sunset. But its reputation has taken a U-turn for the worse as the wanton disregard by both people and establishments for proper sanitary waste disposal has taken its toll on its pristine condition.

On January 11, 2019, a presidential directive ordered the fast-tracking of the cleaning-up of Manila Bay, in support of the continuing Supreme Court Mandamus to clean and rehabilitate Manila Bay. The DENR as lead agency, in consultation with other Mandamus agencies, governors, mayors within Manila Bay, Philippine Army, PNP, DPWH, MMDA, LLDA and etc., set January 27, 2019 as 2019 Manila Bay Rehabilitation.

MWSS-Corporate Office, one of the Mandamus agencies along with MWSS-Regulatory Office, Maynilad Water Services Inc., and Manila Water Company Inc. joined representatives of other Mandamus agencies in the assembly at the Quirino Grandstand. A solidarity march towards Rajah Sulayman Park fronting Manila Bay followed, after which the representatives took to the cleaning activity. More than the cleaning activity, this day aims to raise further awareness to the people of Metro Manila to be more responsible and retrospect in handling waste disposal to arrest environmental degradation. As for the Mandamus, all the defined activities of all affected agencies in it will be implemented.

The program was led by DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu and attended by DPWH Mark A. Villar, PNP Chief Oscar Agbayalde, DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat and DILG Secretary Eduardo Año among others. One highlight of the event was the Oath for Manila Bay wherein all attendees recited an allegiance to be more responsible in taking care of the Bay to redeem its once impressive reputation in the name of environmental protection.
