World Water Day is an international event which highlights the importance of water and serves as an opportunity to increase public awareness on the various water related issues. For the current year, it was celebrated from March 15, 2019 to March 22, 2019. This year’s theme “Leaving no one behind” adapts the central promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: “as sustainable development progresses, everyone must benefit”.
MWSS Corporate Office celebrated this momentous event by holding a water fair dubbed as “Pista Para sa Tubig” last March 19, 2019 and by participating in the World Water Day Philippines Awards as award sponsor for the “Kaagapay sa Tubig Kanlungan” Award on March 22, 2019.
“Pista para sa Tubig”, a Water Fair to Remember World Water Day
The MWSS Corporate Office (MWSS – CO) in partnership with the Local Government of General Nakar, Quezon celebrated World Water Day 2019 by holding “Pista para sa Tubig” at the Municipal Hall of General Nakar, Quezon. This water festivity featured various exhibitors which showcased best management practices and simple technologies on water, natural resources management and biodiversity-friendly livelihood projects to the local communities (i.e., People’s Organizations (PO), Indigenous Peoples (IP)) in the watershed areas of Gen. Nakar, Quezon. This event also served as a venue to raise awareness on the essential role of water resources for domestic use and the importance of securing water sources to ensure sustainability of water supply. In the same way, it also provided ideas to the Peoples’ Organizations in developing project proposals that can be funded by the Gen. Nakar Sustainable Integrated Area Development (GNSIAD) Project.
The participating exhibitors and their corresponding best management practices/simple technologies which were shared to the POs and IPs include:
- Bio Intensive Organic Farming – Municipal Agriculture Office of Gen. Nakar, Quezon
- Bamboo for Watershed Rehabilitation and Livelihood – Philippine Bamboo Foundation, Inc.
- Bamboo Straw – Bambuhay Social Enterprise
- Sining Ipo – Maynilad Water Services, Inc.
- Ahon Tubig/Sanitasyon – Manila Water Foundation
The event also highlighted the launching of the “Agapay Pangkabuhayan sa Tubig Kanlungan”, a financial assistance program that benefits POs for their proposed biodiversity friendly livelihood projects and, the ceremonial turn-over of the financial assistance for the development of water supply system in Sitio Canaway, a low income community with poor access to safe water.

The World Water Day Philippines Awards is a celebration of the achievements of several water champions from different sectors/institutions that have made significant impacts in achieving water and water-environment sustainability in the Philippines. This annual event is held every year during the culminating event of the World Water Day Celebration.
For this year, the MWSS-CO joined as award sponsor and established the “Kaagapay sa Tubig Kanlungan” Award. This award recognizes the efforts of MWSS’ partners in helping ensure water security in MWSS Service Areas to boost their morale in sustaining their initiatives and broaden their engagement in sustainable water resources management.
The recipients of the award on its maiden year are:
- Kaagapay sa Tubig Kanlungan ng Umiray – General Nakar Sustainable Integrated Area Development Project
- Kaagapay sa Tubig Kanlungan ng Ipo – Ipo Watershed Bantay Gubat
- Kaagapay sa Tubig Kanlungan ng La Mesa – Save La Mesa Watershed Project
MWSS CO Deputy Administrator Romeo D. Roderos, NWRB Executive Director Sevillo D. David, Jr. and Cabinet Secretary Karlo Alexei B. Nograles personally handed over the specially sculpted World Water Day Philippines wooden trophy to the awardees last March 22, 2019 at the Novotel Hotel in Cubao, Quezon City. Also present during the event are Deputy Administrator Moro Virgilio M. Lazo of Innovation and Technology, Walter M. Partosa of Asset Management, Byron Carbon of Research and Standards, Ronald Abrigo of Policy,Planning & Public Relations and Roman V. Corpuz of Watershed Management.
