The Department of Environment-Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR- PENRO) in Guiguinto, Bulacan has awarded the MWSS-Corporate Office a Certificate of Recognition for its unwavering support to the implementation of anti-cutting and harvesting of timber in the Natural Residual Forest of Bulacan.

Natural and Residual Forests are forests composed of indigenous trees, not planted by man. For years MWSS has been battling the continued settlement and encroachment of illegal settlers in the watershed.  Preventing them from engaging in illegal logging and charcoal making is a separate daily battle.

MWSS and its concessionaires spend more to address the damage to watershed from illegal logging.  The MWSS through its Asset Management Department not only focuses on re-forestation but also on forest protection to avert the continued degradation of watershed areas that supply the water needs of Metro Manila residents.

MWSS is calling on greater vigilance to prevent timber harvesting as it involves removing vegetation that anchors hillsides and causes chronic erosion that chokes streams, river tributaries with sediment that reduce the reservoirs’ storage capacity.  To maximize the climate benefits of forests, we must keep more forest landscapes intact, manage them more sustainably, and restore more of those landscapes which we have lost.
