Nothing can be more symbolic than President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. giving priority to the renewal of the water cooperation between the Philippines and Singapore. On September 7, 2022, during President Marcos’ State Visit to Singapore, the MWSS and PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency, signed and exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Water Collaboration (PUB). The signing ceremony took place at the Istana, or Singapore State Palace, where MWSS Administrator Leonor Cleofas and PUB Chief Executive Goh Si Hou, exchanged the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of President Marcos and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The renewal of the MoU symbolizes the commitment of the Philippines and Singapore to science and scientific cooperation in addressing the challenges of water security.
After the MoU signing Administrator Cleofas joined in the State Lunch hosted by Singapore President Halimah Yacob and First Gentleman Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee in honor of President Marcos Jr. and First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos.
The gathering provided an opportunity for Admin Cleofas to exchange information and ideas with the various Cabinet officials who comprise the Philippine delegation.
On the final day of her official visit to Singapore, Administrator Cleofas met with key PUB officials. The meeting centered on how the MWSS and PUB, can provide action equal to the ambition articulated by the MoU; how they can showcase one another’s work and harness one another’s networks and platforms on the crucial issues of water and sanitation. Director Michael Toh of the Industry and Technology Collaboration Office and Deputy Director Tiing Liang Moh of the International Relations & Capability Office introduced Admin Cleofas to the PUB consultants who helped shape Singapore’s water industry. In her response, Administrator Cleofas stated, “The complementary experience, expertise, and talents that we as partners bring to the table imply that together we can make an even bigger impact on the people we serve.”
